He received cheers and applauses from about 150 walkers.

“This road to recovery has been long and egregious,” his father, Joe Domalewski, told the crowd. “It takes prayers and finances, and we couldn’t do this without you behind us…It takes a village.”

The fourth annual “A Walk for Steven – Road to Recovery” fundraiser, held in Rifle Camp Park, is the latest of several grass-roots events that have been held to help defray the medical expenses for the family. When Steven was injured pitching for the Wayne Police Athletic League in June 2006, his heart stopped, resulting in neurological damage.

“We’ve been staging this since 2007,” said John R. Kerr, an organizer and a health and physical education director at the YM-YWHA in Wayne, one of the walk’s corporate sponsors. “Steven is a part of the community, and we are a part of the community. It’s about everyone in the community helping out.”

Other businesses donate food, beverages and services during the event.

Ray Beesley of Paterson, another sponsor, donated his photo services.

“If you just think of Steven, it’s a prayer,” said Beesley, who took 117 complimentary photos for those who wanted to remember the day.

Several other friends have set up a website and foundation for well-wishers to make non-profit contributions, Domalewski said.

The walk – which gives participants the option of either a 2.1- or 3.5-mile course – has netted $12,000 each year, he said.

Recently, Steven began a new physical therapy regimen, and following surgery to remove a pump implanted to deliver a muscle relaxant to his spinal cord, he returned to a high school in Clifton, which specializes in students with cerebral palsy, according to the website.

Many participants, such as Sal Gentile of Wayne, whose wife is related to the family, say they are committed to attending the event every year until Steven can walk on his own.

“Many of our friends and neighbors support Steven’s cause,” said Gentile, who brought five family members. “We felt it was important to be with them and to support my in-laws in this difficult time.”
